Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment

Format: Video-recorded lectures
Access: Participants who complete the course by the stated expiration date will have continued access to course materials for three years after that date. 

Target Audience

This activity is designed for all health professionals, including physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and others.

For physicians interested in obtaining obesity medicine certification through the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM), this course counts towards the ABOM requirement of at least 30 hours of ABOM-designated GROUP 1 credits.

This course is available in a two-course package, which provides learners with over 60 credits, fulfilling the credit requirement to apply for the ABOM exam.

Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment offers a comprehensive overview of obesity medicine, providing you with the knowledge and tools to manage obesity effectively. This course focuses on complex case management, integrates pharmacological and surgical options with lifestyle modifications, and covers childhood, adolescent, and adult populations.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss the complexity of the development and treatment of obesity.
  2. Identify, classify, and determine appropriate treatment approaches for people with obesity, including lifestyle, advanced pharmacological approaches, and metabolic surgery.
  3. Implement strategies that target childhood, adolescent, and adult populations to promote better health across the lifespan.
  4. Evaluate patients' unique circumstances through detailed case management.

The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons designates this enduring material for a maximum of 30.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 30.0 medical knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity, with individual assessments of the participant and feedback to the participant, enables the participant to earn 30.0 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME and Self-Assessment requirement(s) of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABS credit.
