Obesity: Additional Topics for Advanced Study
Target Audience
This activity is designed for healthcare professionals—including physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants—with a foundational understanding of obesity assessment and treatment. Completion of an introductory course, such as Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment, is recommended.
For physicians pursuing certification through the American Board of Obesity Medicine, this course counts toward the requirement of at least 30 hours of ABOM-designated Group 1 credits.
This course is available as part of a two-course package that provides learners with over 60 credits, fulfilling the credit requirement to apply for the ABOM exam.
Course Overview
Designed for learners with a foundational background in obesity assessment and treatment—such as those who have completed Obesity: Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment—this course builds on core concepts to advance your clinical knowledge and skills.
Through a comprehensive set of lectures, you’ll engage with topics including lifestyle interventions, nutrition and dietary strategies, weight loss and regain, aging and metabolism, obesity in pregnancy and childhood, the impact of cultural context and weight stigma, health insurance considerations, patient-centered care, and more.

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

Identify behavior and lifestyle tools for weight management.

Use effective counseling techniques to deliver patient-centered care.

Tailor obesity care in special populations (food insecure, older adults, limited means).

Define contributors and effects of childhood obesity.

Discuss research on a range of eating patterns and understand their impact on weight and cardiometabolic health.

Identify methods to help patients improve their sleep.

Describe the effects of physical activity on weight loss and weight maintenance.

Discuss the detrimental effects of weight stigma on psychological and physical health.
Course Format & Access
Video-recorded lectures are available on the course platform and cannot be downloaded. An internet connection is required for viewing. Lecture slides are provided as downloadable PDFs.
Participants must complete the course by the expiration date to retain access. Those who do will retain access to course materials for 3 years after the course expires.

The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Credit Designation Statement
The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons designates this enduring material for a maximum of 32.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 32.25 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn up to 32.25 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit.
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME and Self-Assessment requirement(s) of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program.
